You Might Not Know: JFCS Food Pantry

Our Volunteer Coordinator Kim Toebbe has been out enjoying some personal time, and her cheeriness is missed here in the agency! So today, let’s talk about the Food Pantry, which Kim also manages. You Might Not Know:

The JFCS food pantry refers to the physical pantry, processing 80,000 pounds of food a year, but we also have the Sonny & Janet Meyer Family Food Pantry Fund, which helps support the physical pantry. Two separate things!

The Food Pantry committee has 40 members, and Sonny and Janet Meyer are the chairs. Our pantry is a small closed pantry, meaning that it’s only open to JFCS clients. It relies only on donations, either of money or food. We get donations from numerous places: Dare 2 Care, the Fresh Market, synagogues, individual donors – just to name a few. Volunteers come weekly to lend a hand, sorting and shelving donations. Some of them spend time shopping for items that we’re out of. It’s a real group effort!

We also have programs that support the food pantry, like the Pancake Breakfasts, and more recently the Pizza for the Pantry annual events. FYI, the next P4TP is August 11! :) The support for our food pantry has been amazing, with maxed-out attendance at events, and we’ve received some really nice feedback. One person even described it as “the perfect pantry”!

If you’re looking for more information, check out this month’s special requests for the pantry at the JFCS homepage, or call Sally Hollingsworth at (502) 452-6341 ext. 240 -until Kim returns, that is!
